Sociologue / Sociologist / Ph.D. / Associate Professor in Sociology and American Studies / IRISSO, Université Paris Dauphine, PSL / Junior Member at Institut universitaire de France

I am Associate Professor of Sociology and American Studies at IRISSO, Université Paris Dauphine, PSL, and a Junior Member of the Institut Universitaire de France (2023-2028). I completed my masters and Ph.D in Sociology at Université Paris Cité, graduating in 2018. Prior to joining Dauphine, I was Assistant Professor of American Studies at Université Toulouse Jean Jaurès and a Fulbright and Georges Lurcy fellow at the Department of History at Tulane University (2017-2018).

My work focuses on the medicalization of race from the nineteenth century to the contemporary era, and I am most interested in the social and political uses of science in society. My most recent works tackle social and racial inequalities in relation to environmental health and industrial risks in urban settings. Most recently, I have received grants and fellowships from The Huntington Library, IFRIS, and PSL. In Fall 2024 and Fall 2025 I was a visiting professor at Universidad Nacional de San Martín, Argentina, and in September 2023, I was a visiting research fellow at the Maison Française d’Oxford .

I have recently begun writing a new monograph entitled Hidden in Plain Sight: Race, Stigma and Environmental Sacrifice in the Age of Petrocapitalism. The book examines the production of polluted spaces due to the presence of petrochemical and manufacturing industries in socially disadvantaged, predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods in Los Angeles, California. I am currently working on a new edited volume entitled Sickness and Capitalism: New Essays on Public Health, Medicine, and the Environment and co-edited with historian Christopher D.E. Willoughby. I have also recently co-authored Le racisme scientifique et médical. Circulations internationales et résurgences du XIXe siècle à nos jours with historian Delphine Peireitti-Courtis (scheduled for early 2026 with Presses Universitaires de France). You can learn more about these works here. I also have published peer-reviewed articles in Déviance & Société, Genèses, Politique Américaine, la Revue Française d’Études Américaines, Social Science Information, Histoire médecine et santé, Mouvements, Endeavour, The American Sociologist, New Genetics and Society and you can read summaries or access the full articles here. My book reviews, media appearances and recorded talks can be found here.
